2002 Indian Chief

Sold

In detail…

Up for your consideration is this iconic bike from Indian. This model was made in Gilroy California in 2002. Indian motorcycle’s new flagship – the 2002 Chief – was redesigned from the ground up with a Powerplus 100- cubic inch Indian engine V-Twin engine and an improved chassis design delivering 60 percent more rigidity for improved handling among the new features. The unmistakable Indian Chief full-body profile remains – sculpted, full-valance fenders and an all-new teardrop fuel tank are complemented by the new and dash design and large uncluttered speedometer.
This particular model is in excellent condition having covered just 7000 miles from new. The bike sounds absolutely fantastic and is really nice to ride. It’s a very large bike but shrinks around you when on the move. It’s also a very well balanced bike. It’s extremely comfortable to ride and the feel of the switchgear is good. A few years ago I owned a 1946 Indian Chief and whilst it was an iconic wonder of a machine it was shockingly scary to actually ride in modern traffic. Not the case with this bike.
Key features for the 2002 include:

‘ New 100 cubic-inch Indian PowerplusTM 100 V-Twin engine,
‘ New chassis design with 60 percent more rigidity for improved handling,
‘ New cantilever swingarm and rising-rate rear shock configuration for smoother ride and more precise handling,
‘ New ergonomically-designed, hand-stitched seat for added comfort and reduced fatigue,
‘ Reinforced rear structure for added passenger comfort and durability,
‘ Larger 5.8-gallon fuel tank for increased range
‘ Larger speedometer with digital odometer for increased visibility.

The heart of the Chief is the Powerplus 100 cubic-inch (1638cc) 45-degree, V-Twin engine designed and developed by Indian. Distinctive and unique to Indian, the serrated appearance of the polished rocker boxes and the black, rounded cylinders pay tribute to Indian’s past. This combination gives the engine a strong, unique profile, while the rounded cylinders increase the area of the cooling fins for improved air circulation and engine cooling.

The engine is fed by a 42mm, Mikuni “flat-slide” carburettor that is mounted on the left side of the engine, which is unique to early Indian motorcycles. This carburettor package delivers smooth throttle response throughout the entire RPM range. To ensure optimum lubrication and scavenging, the motor features a gerotor oil pump system. The Chief’s drivetrain features a constant-mesh, five-speed transmission, primary chain drive and rear belt drive.

The Indian Chief is a road machine in every detail, featuring an all-new chassis design and swingarm configuration delivering 60 percent more rigidity while reducing overall weight by 14 percent. This robust chassis features a reinforced, large diameter backbone and all-new KW rising rate, single-shock rear suspension with adjustable preload. Confidence inspiring handling and a full inch more rear travel combine to provide a comfortable ride in many different road conditions.

Up front, the Chief features 41mm hydraulic, dual-damping front forks. The rake angle has been decreased from 36 degrees to 34 providing more responsive handling. Adding to the comfortable ride of the Chief are wide MT/90-16 tires mounted on 60-spoke chrome wheels. Brembo 4-piston brakes front and rear complete the package.

This cherished example comes with the original sales brochure. It is currently being UK registered so will come with 12 months MOT and we will also give the bike a service so it’s ready to go.
